Basic Drupal web design using the core Drupal CMS (content management system) is enough to create a small website with limited functionality, but the framework is favored for its vast adaptability and unique, functional programming options. However, it often takes knowing more than your basic programming to effectively utilize Drupal modules and customizations.
A World Of Options—Drupal Modules
The core PHP framework that is Drupal will build a basic, functional website. It is often enough for users seeking to construct small personal websites with limited usability. But the real opportunity for Drupal sites lies in Drupal customization and the use of specific, hand-picked Drupal modules.
It is the Drupal modules that provide the added benefit of additional functions. These add-on features are the codes and programs that allow you to include the specific features and functions that are needed for your site.
Drupal modules provide a great many additional options. It is difficult to say how many options and opportunities those modules provide, as there are always new Drupal modules being built and endless options to combine modules and functions for more features and flexibility. However, for all but the most basic Drupal sites the modules are key—they are, in effect, what really makes or breaks a great, usable, user-friendly and functional Drupal web design.
More Options With Drupal Customization
The other beautiful thing about the Drupal CMS PHP is that it is an open source code. That means that the code is disclosed to the user, and can be changed and modified at will. In fact, it is this very feature that has resulted in the wide flexibility and many options the enhanced Drupal core and Drupal modules provide.
In practice, what this means for Drupal web design is that the possibilities with Drupal customization are limited only by the knowledge, creativity, and expertise of the person overseeing the Drupal web design. A talented programmer or designer can modify a single Drupal module code over and over and come out with a completely unique feature every time. In addition, he or she can also use the core functional programs and still create a customized graphic design, creating an even greater opportunity to stand out from the web crowd.
Stand Out With Drupal Customization
Together, the Drupal modules and Drupal customization options provide nearly unlimited possibilities for the talented web designer. Admittedly, these customization options are something that is beyond the average user, but a number of professional web designers have embraced the opportunities that Drupal presents for them. By combining the high functionality of the core Drupal CMS with the unlimited capabilities of Drupal modules and Drupal customizations, web designers have changed the face of website design today.
Your best chance for a truly unique, attractive, and ultra-functional Drupal CMS website is to work with an expert in the field. To maximize your Drupal web design, find a Drupal expert who can present you with an array of possibilities, capturing and combining the core functionality and additional features that Drupal customization and Drupal module selection have to offer.

What is a Web Content Management System ?
A content management system (CMS) is a software system designed for organizing and easing creation and management of documents and other content. By content, we mean any type of digital information : text, images, graphics, audio, video files, archives etc. Specifically, a web content management system like Joomla! aims to facilitate the tasks required to publish web content on web sites, in a collaborative manner.
What can I do with Joomla! ?
Joomla! is a free open source content management system licensed under the GNU/GPL license which can be used to easily manage every aspect of a website, from adding content or graphics, to updating a product catalogue or managing important data. Joomla!, which means “all together” in Swahili, is a powerful, flexible, customisable, powerful and relatively easy to use Web Content Management System. To create and run a website site using Joomla!, all you need is a web hosting account with PHP and MySql support. Joomla!s use and scope is very large, from the creation and management of personal homepages or small businesses to complex enterprise-level websites or applications. It allows numerous themes and extensions (most of them will have to be installed and activated afer the main installation though). The template system is one of the easiest to learn in the Content Management System family. It offers two types of administration – a front-end for registered users, author and publisher and a back-end for the Manager, Administrator and Super Administrator groups.
A Brief History of Joomla!
Joomla! arrived in 2005 as a branch of another well-known CMS, Mambo after an epic controversy between the Mambo’s development team at that time and the Miro Corporation, which also develops its own commercial version, accused of betraying open-source and community values by granting most of the project’s control and future to Miro Corporation via the recently launched Mambo’s Foundation. As there were also several issues with Mambo’s name and copyright, all of this finally led the core team to resign from the Mambo project in August 2005, regrouped under the name of “Open Source Matters” in order to develop the project independently. The two code bases were almost identical at this stage but the latest version, Joomla! 1.5, has now been completely rewritten from scratch. Joomla! now powers millions of websites world-wide and its community is very active. Both Joomla! and Mambo have won numerous prizes and awards in the last three years and now live two separate lives.

A flexible, elegant and easy-to-use content management system. Textpattern is both free and open source. Textpattern is a web application designed to help overcome these and other hurdles to publishing online, and to simplify the production of well-structured, standards-compliant web pages.
Popular sites that using textpattern as publishing system included on their website, one of them is Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects, it is an internationally renowned architecture firm whose projects have included major museums, residences, colleges and public buildings. Mosman Library is another one:

Mosman is an historic harbour side area of 8.7 square kilometres just north of the Sydney CBD. Mosman Council administers and services this area for the benefit of residents, businesses and visitors.

e107 is a content management system written in PHP and using the popular open source MySQL database system for content storage. It’s completely free, totally customisable and in constant development.
e107 takes its origin from code originally used on the LiteStep websites. Jalist who was responsible for the development of those websites, wanted to re-use some of the code from litestep.net and ls2k.org and built a more modular system. This system could then be used as a codebase for other people to create their own community driven websites.
The codebase was maintained solely by Jalist until version 0.612 when a development team was formed. The development team now develops, maintains and builds releases for the e107 system.
In 2006 and 2007, e107 was nominated by the public as one of the five finalists in The Packt Open Source Content Management System Award, the results can be found here packtpub
The current stable release is 0.7.11. This version is an almost total rewrite of the 0.6x tree and includes hundreds (maybe thousands) of added features and bugfixes.
